The preservation and authentification of electronic documents are perhaps two of the major issues being debated by archivists nowadays. Experts from all across the world are currently engaged in an ongoing discussion as to ¿ first ¿ which elements are those that may define the authenticity of an electronic document once its incorporation into a given archive has been finally decided; and ¿ second ¿ which measures should be taken in order to ensure that such documents are preserved without further risk for their authenticity.
To find a cogent answer for these questions has been the main goal of the InterPARES Project ¿ standing for International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems ¿ in its initial stage. An interdisciplinary, international study was thus carried out by experts based on a variety of different countries (namely Australia, Canada, China, The US, France, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland Portugal, The United Kingdom, and Sweden). The project has turned out to be the most important one of its kind to this date.
